Richard Potter Opening Reception And Show At Globe Fine Art

Painting the landscape of New Mexico has flowed naturally out of my artistic interest as I grew up with and in the arroyo’s, mountains and hills. It has always felt very natural to explore this landscape in oil painting. For me, these are paintings about feeling, relationship, and connection. I have never really looked at my paintings of New Mexico as being “Realist” or “Representational” paintings. What the landscape and the paintings feel like have as much value as how they look to the eye.

The encaustic painting process came to my attention almost 15 years ago. The fluidity of the paint was immediately appealing as was the transparency of the wax. It is a very earthy and improvisatory technique in addition to being refined and sophisticated.

Beeswax is, what I would call, an “inclusory” medium. It readily accepts and embraces almost everything that you might want to introduce or do with it. It is a very accepting process and a joy to work with. I like the feeling that people can have a relationship with a painting. In my encaustic works I want to create a place and an entity, which the viewer can explore and get to know.
