Georgia O'Keeffe Museum: Recent Acquisition

Alfred Stieglitz. Georgia O'Keeffe, 1918. Gelatin silver print, 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches. Museum Purchase. [2014.3.78]

Dale Kronkright, Head of Conservation at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, identified that a recent acquisition gifted to the Museum is likely the same watercolor pan set that appears in Alfred Stieglitz’s 1918 photo of Georgia O’Keeffe, pictured above.

According to Kronkright, “Using proportional measurements of the pencil O’Keeffe is holding and the pad of cartridge paper she is painting on in the Stieglitz image, along with the number of pans in our recent watercolor pan set gift, the location of the thumb notch and raised ridge on the reservoir side of the opened box, along with the additional fact that the pans in the gift watercolor kit are glazed porcelain Winsor & Newton pans, it is overwhelmingly likely that the gift kit is the one pictured with O’Keeffe in the 1918 photo."
